Twist Action Ballpoint – Patriot Swirl 230704

This contemporary looking twist action ballpoint was made using a multi coloured acrylic blank. The swirling iridecent blue background with white and red waves colours this interesting and eye catching effect.

The metal fittings have a highly polished chrome finish to contrast with the highly polished multi-colour body.

By holding the body and rotationg the chrome top car the writing tip can be moved in or out.

To change the refill simply hold the body firmly in one hand and unscrew the chrome tip. Carefully slide out the ‘Parker’ style refill being careful not to lose the spring.
Replacement is simply a case of reversing this process. (See photo for details)

A black Parker type refill is fitted as standard, but can easy be changed by carefully unscrewing the lower black section from the coloured part of the pen. This standard refill can be purchased at most stationary stores.

Ziricote Spiders Web Twist Pen – 23502

The Spiders Web pen was designed and made for a little light fun. Lots of people are put of by the thought of spiders but I thought it represented the darker side of life… a web of intrigue. The pen had been made from Zircote (pronounced zi·ri·co·te \ ˌzirəˈkōtā \) which has a very unique appearance, sometimes referred to as “spider-webbing” or “landscape” grain figure. The grain is straight to slightly interlocked with a medium to fine texture and a beautiful natural luster. It is quite a rare timber being found only in southern Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.Common uses for Zircote are: Furniture, veneer, cabinetry, gun-stocks, musical instruments (usually acoustic and electric guitars), and other small turned objects. Once the body was turned to size the surface was finished with several grades of abrasive finally using 1600grit. A coat of clear lacquer was then applied, allowed to dry and then de-nibbed with more 1600 grit. This process was repeated eight more times before the final coat was buffed with a micro-fibre cloth.

The chrome and black upper part of the pen can be pulled off if held firmly. This well reveal the twisting mechanism which and be unscrewed from the lower section of the pen. The parker refil can then be replaced before reassembly in the reverse order.

Twist Action Stylus Ballpoint – Laurel – 20801

This contemporary looking twist action ballpoint was made using wood cut from a Laurel tree in my garden.

The wood was carefully selected for an interesting grain pattern caused by side branches. The main body of the tube was turned in my workshop down to the required diameters. The grain was sealed using thin viscocity CA adhesive to bind the fibres togeter befor the surface was finished using several ever decreasing grade of abrasive paper. Once smooth, two coats of cellulose sanding sealer was applied. A light rub with 3000 grit abrasive pad increased the sheen before several coats of Melamine lacquer were applied. Each coat being ‘de-nibbed’ with a 3000grit pad. Finally the finished components were assembled ready for delivery.

The metal fittings have a highly polished gold plated finish to contrast with the highly polished black components at either end.

The top of this version is fitted with a rubber stylus suitable for use on most tablets and touch screens

A black Parker type refill is fitted as standard, but can easy be changed by carefully pulling out the lower section of the pen (as can be seen in the photo above). Then the mechanism is then unscrewed to remove the ‘Parker’ style refill. (again, shown in the photographs) . This standard refill can be purchased at most stationary stores.

This pen was made specially as a wedding present for my good friends wife. I hope she is pleased with it!

Outdoor Life Twist Pen in Hawthorn – 211101

The perfect pen for an outdoor enthusiast, to use when writing their nature observations. This pen showcases the natural world with elements found in nature. It features tree silhouettes on the tip and the sun rising over mountains on the pen end. The phrase “Adventure Awaits” also appears on the pen top. The clip reminds you of an ancient giant tree representing the strength and wonder of the outdoors. The metal fittings are in a pewter finish to add to the rugged look. Hawthorn wood was used for the pen body. it seemed appropriate to use this wood as Hawthorne bushes and hedges are common when walking in the great outdoors. Hawthorn wood and Mountain Ash have a ver similar appearance with the creamy yellow sapwood contrasting with the dark golden brown heartwood

Cut from a single piece of wood has allowed the grain to follow through from top to tip. Having turned to body to the required dimensions it was sanded with several diminishing grade of abrasive paper. Next a coat of cellulose sander sealer was used to stabilise the surface before more sanding and then several coats of Melamine spray finish were applied.

It uses a smooth writing Parker style refill which can be changed by pulling the two halves of the pen apart. Next the twist mechanism is unscrewed (anticlockwise) to release the refill. Assembly is straight forward reversing the dismantling. However, it is suggested that the twist mechanism is set in the retracted position before the two halves are carefully pushed together ensuring the wood grain aligns.

This pen was made as a gift for a friend’s partner as a way of saying “Thank you”. Their business Contstella has worked wonders on my car and I felt this was the least I could do. I tried to design a pen that was elegant and comfortable for the female hand and still be attractive. I decided to use a piece of Damson wood cut from a tree that had been grown in our garden. Damson is a variation of plum and produces very attractively coloured wood. Being close grain it gives a very smooth surface which I coated in sanding sealer prior to applying the self-made Constella water slide transfer. Once this had dried several coats of Melamine spray finish were applied, each being carefully sanded between coats.

The pen uses a standard Cross style refill which is replaced by carefully pulling the two halves apart. The end of the refill will be seen protruding from the twist mechanism. This is carefully unscrewed from the mechanism before replacing. The two halves are then carefully pushed back together ensuring the grain of the wood is aligned.

Twist Action Ballpoint Pen – Lilac & Satin Gold 801001

This handmade twist action ballpoint pen was made as a special commission for a client specifying that the pens should be made from an unusual timber but relatively slimline for comfort. I decided to use a piece of homegrown Lilac tree branch to make this pen

The two parts of the pen were cut to size before being drill out to accept the reinforcing tubes. After bonding the tubes to the timber they were fitted to the lathe and tuned to the required dimensions. After sanding smooth using various grades to produce a mirror finish they were polished and waxed. After leaving time for the polish and wax cure the two parts were removed from the lathe and assembled together with the various components.

The metal fittings have an unusual satin gold plate to contrast with the highly polished Lilac wood. The pen is a slim design to increase comfort for those who like to write!

A black Cross type refill is fitted as standard, but can easy be changed by carefully fulling the two halves of the pen apart. The refill is then unscrewed from the twist mechanism before replacing. This standard Cross refill can be purchased at most stationary stores.

The American Electric blue acrylic twist pen is made from an eye catching rectangular acrylic blank, hand turned on my lathe.

Once the cylindrical section is completed several stages of sanding and polishing take place until the blanks have a mirror finish.

The 10ct twist action pen features the Artisan style centre band and is accented with black chrome on the writing tip and cap.

A premium double-twist mechanism operates the black Cross type refill that is fitted as standard..

Twist Action Sierra Ballpoint – Lilac wood & Gold 610034

This unique twist action ball point pen was created using a piece of Lilac tree that grew in my parents garden when I was growing up. Sometime ago the high winds broke some of the branches off so after it was air seasoned I decided to make this pen for my sister as a gift. Judging by her reaction she loves it!

The metal fittings have a highly polished 22ct Gold plated finish to contrast with the highly polished titanium grip and end cap. The polished wooden body of the pen is separated from the polished Titanium grip by an attractive gold engraved band.

A black Parker type refill is fitted as standard, but can easy be changed by carefully pulling the lower metal section from the coloured part of the pen. The metal twist mechanism is then unscrewed to reveal the refill.

This standard refill can be purchased at most stationary stores.

Twist Action Golf Club Ballpoint Pen – Olive Wood- 602005

This handmade twist action ballpoint pen was made as a special commission for a client specifying that he would like it as a gift for a friend who likes to play golf.

I selected a piece of Olive wood as the grain pattern is very eye-catching and attractive against a quite simple mechanism design.
The normal plain clip was replaced with a golf club shape to fit in with the clients requirements.

Olive wood is very hard and is prized for its durability, colour, high combustion temperature and interesting grain patterns. Because of the commercial importance of the fruit, and the relatively small size of the tree, olive wood and its products are relatively expensive. Common uses of the wood include: kitchen utensils, carved wooden bowls, cutting boards, fine furniture, and decorative items.

The yellow or light greenish-brown wood is often finely veined with a darker tint; being very hard and close-grained, it is valued by woodworkers.
The olive branch was often a symbol of abundance, glory and peace. Quite appropriate I thought as this project is to be a retirement gift!

The two parts of the pen body were fitted to my lathe and turned down to the required diameters followed by several stages of sanding from 230 grit down to 1400 grit. The the pieces were then polished with several coats of a hardwearing friction wood polish before being waxed.

The metal fittings have a polished 22ct gold plate to compliment the swirly colours in the wood. The pen is a slim design to increase comfort for those who like to write!
