The Vertex Roller Ball is particularly unusual in that the cap is magnetic. Fittings are made of  striking hexagonal steel with a highly polished gunmetal plated finish.

The Lilac body was hand-turned in my workshop a meer 3 metres away from the Lilac tree that produced the pen blank. Having been turned to almost exact shape and size, it was then smotthed with various grakes of abrasive paper ranging fro 320grit to 1200grit. Two coats of sanding sealer were then applied with a slight sand to de-nib the surface. Water-slide transfers were then produced with the wording on. After leaving to dry overnight the transfers were applied and again left to dry..Several light coats of Melamine lacquer are then used to seal the transfer in place each being allowed to dry before a light sand to de-nib the surface before it was buffed with soft cotton cloth.

To replace the Schneider RollerBall refill simply unscrew the hexagonal tip from the body.Ensure the spring at the top of the body tube is not lost during this process.

I obtained some samples of this unusual timber called Holm Oak, sometimes called Holly Oak. It is quite a coarse open grain which normally doesnt lend itself to small objects like pen bodies. This however, not only looks attractive, but sands to a smooth finish. Following the sanding with various reducing grades of abrasive the pen body was given a light spray with sander sealer before another ligh sand. The 4 coats of clear Melamine lacquer was sprayed on. Each coat allwed to dry for several hours before a light sand and yet another coat of lacquer.

The term “holm” oak is another word for “holly,” so named because the foliage of Quercus ilex resembles Holly. (The tree is also sometimes known as Evergreen Oak, since it keeps its leaves year round, with old leaves falling off after the new ones appear. Holm Oak falls into the white oak group, and shares many of the same traits as White Oak (Quercus alba).

Holly or Holm Oak is rarely if ever imported, it is usually only available in or around its natural range surrounding the Mediterraenean Basin. So I am pleased to secure a small quantity of it. Holm Oak is ofeten used to make tools, cabinetry, furniture, wine barrels, turned objects, and even firewood (which seems sacrilege!)

The pen uses a Schneider Topball 850 refill that can be purchased from most good stationary stores or online. They are available in a choice of 4 ink colours.

The centre section is made using’ tube wound’ carbon fibre, meaning that there is no seam to the weave. Epoxy resin encases the carbon weave to give a smooth glossy finish

The tip unscrews to reveal a Schmidt L888 ceramic refill available at most good stationary stores.

This particular pen has been made using the a piece of reclaimed Perazzi Shotgun stock to create the top section with its engraved gun metal plated cartridge cap. A detailed miniature shotgun is used to create the clip.

Perazzi is the Ferrari of shotguns with high grade Turkish Walnut stocks costing many thousands of pounds. This particular damaged stock cost £2,500 to replace and that was without labour costs! The pictures in the gallery below show the stock before it was cut into pen blanks, and also typical trees after they have been cut down. One of the factors effecting the cost is that Turkish Walnut trees are very old and the government have placed restrictions on how many can be cut each season.

The main body of the pen is created from a piece of wavy brown grained Sweet Chestnut wood and creates an attractive contrast to the dark Turkish Walnut. A replica 30cal bullet is used to create the writing tip, whilst the 30cal case and replica primer is used to to close the top of the pen.

All metalwork is gun metal deep plated to enhance the appearance.
