Parazzi Walnut Under Lever Rifle Pen – 200801

This prototype was made as a commission for a friend to give as a gift to a shooter. I was able to use the last pieces of a damaged Perazzi shotgun stock for the woodwork with several coats of clear lacquer applied to give a glass-like finish in the same way the original Perazzis are finished.The stock was carved to shape carefully by hand keeping the look of a real stock without being and exact replica. Antique Pewter plating was used on the metalwork to simulate the age worn steel parts of an actual Winchester.

The finished pen was supplied with a ‘kid leather’ rifle holster for protection.

The Parker style refill can be removed by unscrewing the barrel from the forestock and sliding out the spring and refill.

The replica .30 calibre bullet cartridge and the chrome bullet tip both add authenticity to the look of this pen.

The body of the pen was created from a damaged shotgun stock, hand turning a piece of Perazzi Turkish Walnut to the required diameter. It is then sanded smooth with several grades of abrasive finally using 12000 grit micromesh to  finish it to a mirror polish.  Four coats of a special hard polish are then applied. Each being buffed to a high shine on a revolving lathe. Perazzi Shot guns are some of the best in the world. Their stocks and forends are made of the finest quality Walnut root from centuries-old trees, like the one in the photograph.. Each blank is carefully selected and classified before they are subjected to a long drying processing before being made into stocks. Grading is based on the detail and colours of wood grain. This stock was graded SCO which is the highest grade Perazzi use.

The main external components are glossy deep Gunmetal plated to provide durable and dependable service. The rifle shaped clip and primer cap are finished in a contrasting  22ct Gold plate.

Comes with a black ink refill and a velvet sleeve. Replacement of the Parker Style ink refill is done by unscrewing the tip and replacements can be found at most stationers.

This particular pen has been made using the a piece of reclaimed Perazzi Shotgun stock to create the top section with its engraved gun metal plated cartridge cap. A detailed miniature shotgun is used to create the clip.

Perazzi is the Ferrari of shotguns with high grade Turkish Walnut stocks costing many thousands of pounds. This particular damaged stock cost £2,500 to replace and that was without labour costs! The pictures in the gallery below show the stock before it was cut into pen blanks, and also typical trees after they have been cut down. One of the factors effecting the cost is that Turkish Walnut trees are very old and the government have placed restrictions on how many can be cut each season.

The main body of the pen is created from a piece of wavy brown grained Sweet Chestnut wood and creates an attractive contrast to the dark Turkish Walnut. A replica 30cal bullet is used to create the writing tip, whilst the 30cal case and replica primer is used to to close the top of the pen.

All metalwork is gun metal deep plated to enhance the appearance.

The design uses a popular Parker style refill which can be accessed by unscrewing the tip to  reveal the refill. Replacement is simply a reverse of the process.
