The body of the pen has been turned from Mountain Ash which give the attractive golden brown colouring. This piece was cut to include some of the creamy sapwood as a contrast to enable a message to be applied using the waterslide transfer method. Once dry the pen body was sprayed with several coats of clear Melamine gloss lacquer until a glass-like finish was achieved.

The writing tip is retracted by gently twisting the tip whilst holding the body. To extend the tip just twist in the opposite direction.

To change the refill simply retract the tip and then gently continue twisting. The pewter end cap will unscrew to allow you to then replace the refill.

The wood used is a native of the UK – Rowan, also known as Mountain Ash due to the fact that it grows well at high altitudes and its leaves are similar to those of the ash, Fraxinus excelsior. However, the two species are not related.

The colour red was considered to be the best colour for fighting evil, and so the rowan, with its bright red berries, has long been associated with magic and witches. Its old Celtic name is ‘fid na ndruad’, which means wizards’ tree. In Ireland it was planted near houses to protect them against spirits, and in Wales rowan trees were planted in churchyards. Cutting down a rowan was considered taboo in Scotland. This wood is from a neighbours tree damaged in winter gales.

The wood was used for stirring milk to prevent it curdling, and as a pocket charm against rheumatism. It was also used to make divining rods.

The mechanism design is based on a five-speed H pattern car gear change and can be shifted just like the real thing! Authenticity abounds; The cap features a car tyre with a true to life tread and hubcap. The tip features the same tyre tread as the cap. The gear knob includes an etched five-speed pattern. And the industrialised crowbar clip attaches to the body with two small screws rounds to out the design.

The refill fully advances at the front of the shifter and fully retracts at the back of the shifter.
The design uses a popular Parker style refill which can be accessed by unscrewing the tip to  reveal the refill. Replacement is simply a reverse of the process.

Made from Mountain Ash for the main body of the pen with contrasting gunmetal enamel fittings. This wood is often found in domestic settings, but not usually sold commercially for wood working. My current stock was sourced from a neighbours tree that blew down in the gales.

The replica .30 calibre bullet cartridge and the chrome bullet tip both add authenticity to the look of this pen.

The pen has been made by hand turning a piece of  Mountain Ash and finishing it to a mirror polish.  All external components are glossy gunmetal plated to provide durable and dependable service.

The pen is very stylish and shows well in all lighting conditions and will make a memorable gift for any occasion, such as a Birthday, Father’s Day, Christmas, or Graduation Day.

The woodwork was sanded six times with progressively finer grit  abrasive to create a very smooth surface.  The surface is polished to a mirror like shine using 12 polishing steps to create a showroom quality finish.

Comes with your choice of ink color and a velvet sleeve. Replacement Parker Style ink cartridges can be found at most stationers.

The metal fittings have a highly polished 22ct Gold plate finish to contrast with the highly polished black grip and end cap. The polished wood body is separated from the polished black grip by an attractive  Gold plated engraved band.

A black Parker type refill is fitted as standard, but can easy be changed by carefully pulling  the lower metal section from the coloured part of the pen. The metal twist mechanism is then unscrewed to reveal the refill.

This standard refill can be purchased at most stationary stores.
