This elegant pen is made from highly polished Olive wood with black plated metal components.  Olive is a native of Europe and East Africa. Olive trees are commercially important throughout the natural regions where they grow. There are several subspecies and hundreds of cultivars of Olea europaea; the olives harvested from the trees are made into olive oil. Because of the fruit’s economic importance, healthy, cultivated Olive trees (O. europaea) aren’t felled for timber. Availability is generally limited to pruned branches, trimmings, and diseased/storm damaged orchard trees. Short lumber, turning squares, and burls are occasionally available from wild trees, as well as the closely related East African Olive (O. capensis). Prices are usually very high.

The Chrome plating uses a “premium rack plating” process and is covered with an epoxy coating for extreme durability.

The upper half of the pen features a hand-turned American Black Walnut section to add a quality natural look and feel to this superb addition to any shooters collection.

Black walnut is highly prized for its dark-colored, straight grained, true heartwood. It is heavy, strong, shock resistant and yet can be easily split and worked. Black walnut is one of the most durable hardwoods in the US. The wood can be kiln dried and holds its shape well after seasoning which makes this wood even more attractive for wood working. Walnut wood has historically been used for gun stocks, furniture, flooring, paddles, coffins, and a variety of other wood products.

The woodwork was sanded six times with progressively finer grit abrasive to create a very smooth surface.  The surface is polished to a mirror like shine using 12 polishing steps to create a showroom quality finish.

I turned this elegant pen from a blank cut from the heartwood of a  Brazilian Kingwood tree. Heartwood is a dark purplish or reddish brown with darker black streaks. Sapwood is a pale yellow. This wood provided a  dark lustrous contrast  against the polished deep chrome fittings.  Its a perfect combination of refinement and industrial design.

Kingwood is considered a true rosewood in the Dalbergia genus, It is among the densest (and probably strongest) of all the rosewoods. There is very little mechanical data available on Kingwood, though given its weight, and its relation to other rosewoods, it’s likely to be extremely stiff, strong, and stable.

In terms of its history, Kingwood supposedly got its name from several French kings (Louis XIV and Louis XV) that preferred the wood in the use of fine furniture.
