The metal fittings have a highly polished chrome finish to contrast with the highly polished multi-colour body.

By holding the body and rotationg the chrome top car the writing tip can be moved in or out.

To change the refill simply hold the body firmly in one hand and unscrew the chrome tip. Carefully slide out the ‘Parker’ style refill being careful not to lose the spring.
Replacement is simply a case of reversing this process. (See photo for details)

A black Parker type refill is fitted as standard, but can easy be changed by carefully unscrewing  the lower black section from the coloured part of the pen. This standard refill can be purchased at most stationary stores.

The pen tip features a fierce, intricately cast eagle head with the engraved words, “Ride Hard. Live Free” as a band above the eagle head. A true to life old school single cylinder engine adorns the pen end. A machined shock absorber sits beneath the engine while the engine’s straight exhaust pipes act as the pen clip. On the shock absorber you’ll find a super cool “kickstart” mechanism that replicates the kickstarter on the motorcycle. This mechanism functions the same way as my Bolt Action pens to smoothly advance and retract the refill.

The body of the pen is made from wood cut from a Laurel tree in my garden. The wood was carefully selected for an interesting grain pattern caused by side branches. The main body of the tube was turned in my workshop down to the required diameters. The grain was sealed using thin viscocity CA adhesive to bind the fibres togeter befor the surface was finished using several ever decreasing grade of abrasive paper. Once smoothe  two coats of cellulose sanding sealer was applied. A light rub with 3000 grit abrasive pad increased the sheen before several coats of Melamine lacquer wer applied. Each coat being ‘de-nibbed’ with a 3000grit pad. Finally the finished components were assembled  ready for delivery.

This pen was especially made as a wedding present for a very good friend of mine. Being an outstanding architectural blacksmith who is into anything automotive, im sure he will appreciate this creation

To change the ‘Parker’ style refill simply unscrew the eagle head tip ensuring you do not lose the small spring inside the tip. (see photo above) Re-assembly is simply the reverse.

The pen uses a standard Cross style refill which is replaced by carefully pulling the two halves apart. The end of the refill will be seen protruding from the twist mechanism. This is carefully unscrewed from the mechanism before replacing. The two halves are then carefully pushed back together ensuring the grain of the wood is aligned.

I decided to use the shock absorber pen design as it is both unusual and in keeping with his mechanical interests. Damson wood was used for the removable cover as it was from a tree grown in our garden. It further adds to the personal nature of the pen and looks extremely attractive. To further the personalisation I replicated the business logo as a waterslide transfer and applied it prior to applying several coats of Melamine spray lacquer. This form of finish is both moisture resistant and hard wearing.

With this pen design the spring platforms actually compress the spring just like the real thing! Once the Damson wood cap is unscrewed it can be fitted to the opposite end of the damper to help with the pens ergonomics.

The refill is a Parker mini type available at most good stationary suppliers and can be changed by unscrewing the writing tip from the main body of the pen before pulling out the refill.

This design is an ideal gift for the petrol-head in your family or friends!

Black walnut is highly prized for its dark-colored, straight grained, true heartwood. It is heavy, strong, shock resistant and yet can be easily split and worked. Black walnut is one of the most durable hardwoods in the US. The wood can be kiln dried and holds its shape well after seasoning which makes this wood even more attractive for wood working. Walnut wood has historically been used for gun stocks, furniture, flooring, paddles, coffins, and a variety of other wood products.
