Lilac Chrome Vertex Ballpoint – 231202

This pen was made as a very special gift. I was asked to include the wording if possible. So I chose a piece of lilac wood from my garden. Its a native of Northern Europe, grown as a domestic shrub or tree so it tends not to produce large diameter blanks for turning. Its latin name is Syringa vulgaris. Lilacs are often considered to symbolize first love. Lilac has the latin name Syringa vulgaris. It has a number of legends and customs associated with its iconic blooms. First and foremost is the story behind its botanical name. Syringa was a beautiful wood nymph in Greek mythology. The god Pan spied her one day, lusted for her and took chase. Depending on the version of the story, to get away from him, she either transformed herself into a reed or a lilac bush, both of which make great flutes. Ultimately, Pan won because he made a flute from her disguise and it never left his side from then on. Rather appopriate I feel as the pen is one of a set to celebrate a couples engagement.

The Vertex is a push-button operated ballpoint pen. Fittings are made of striking hexagonal steel with a highly polished chrome plated finish.

The Lilac body was hand-turned in my workshop a meer 3 metres away from the Lilac tree that produced the pen blank. Having been turned to almost exact shape and size, it was then smotthed with various grakes of abrasive paper ranging fro 320grit to 1200grit. Two coats of sanding sealer were then applied with a slight sand to de-nib the surface. Water-slide transfers were then produced with the wording on. After leaving to dry overnight the transfers were applied and again left to dry..Several light coats of Melamine lacquer are then used to seal the transfer in place each being allowed to dry before a light sand to de-nib the surface before it was buffed with soft cotton cloth.

To replace the ‘Parker’ typel refill simply unscrew the hexagonal tip from the body.Ensure the spring at the top of the body tube is not lost during this process.

This pen has been made with the astronomical theme of moon and stars depicted in the gold plated fittings. The wooden body is made from a single piece of Lilac wood which was cut to length prior to turning. By using this method the grain and colouring of the wood follows through from top to bottom. So its quite apt that this pen was made as a set to celebrate a couples engaement. Combining together the legend based on Syringa and Pan along with the decoration of stars and moon seems so appropriate.

When making the pen body, the two parts were turned on a common mandrel to approximate size before being sanded with decreasing grade of abrasive papers. When the surface felt very smooth to the touch the grain was sealed with a coat of cellulose sanding sealer. before the final sanding with 1600 grit cloth. Water-slide transfers were then created with the couples names. These were applied on the smooth surface before allowing to dry overnight. A coat of clear lacquer were then sprayed and allowed to dry for several hours. This process was repeated six times until a glass like finish was achieved.

Once the lacquered had hardened the various parts of the pen were carefully assembled to ensure the grain on each part followed through.

The Parker type refill is changed by simply pulling the two wooden halves of the pen apart. Then the extended mechanism is unscrewed. See photgraphs for detail

Semi Auto Rifle Camo Pen – 191005

With this design I created a pen that represents one of the most popular gun-styles – the semi automatic rifle.

The individual details of the pen create stylistic authenticity in homage to these rifles:
The pen tip: Represents the Picatinny rail of the rifle. The tip is CNC machined from solid Aluminium, consistent with true semi-auto rifle materials for a lightweight, ergonomic design. The muzzle brake or “compensator”, which redirects exploding gunpowder gases and counters recoil, is located at the tip of the pen.

The pen cap end: Is inspired by the rifle’s lower-receiver. This is the part of the gun that accommodates the trigger, safety, magazine housing, and carry handle/rear sights. The pen end, or buttstock which is the end of the gun that rests against the user’s shoulder, has been adapted as a scope.

The scope easily rotates and flips into an upward and seats magnetically when retracted.

The pen clip: Represents the carry handle and peep sight of the rifle.

The mechanism: The side-click arm represents the bolt-group and trigger of the rifle. The mechanism is clicked or “fired” forward to extend the refill.

The body of the pen has been made using a swirl pattern acrylic resin that give a camoflage effect.

The pen tip is unscrewed from the main body to remove the Parker style refill.

Beech cross-grain Twist Pen – 907002&3

This pen was created as ‘one of a pair’ from a piece of cross-grain timber cut from an old beech tree having to be removed. The tree had sentimental value for two neighbours who had known each other from childhood, so it was rather fitting that I was able to create something ‘long-lasting’ from its branches. Because of the size and shape of the off-cut the grain unusually goes across the pen rather than along its length. This gives it an almost irridecent appearance with the medullary rays radiating from the centre.

The metal fittings have a gunmetal grey enamel finish to make them hard wearing. Both pens have a contemporary look and feel to them with the clip curving around to become part of the upper pen body.

The pen is operated by holding the main body in one hand and rotating the tip to eject the writing tip and then turning in reverse to retract to safety.

The Parker style refill can be removed by unscrewing the metal tip and sliding out the spring and refill.

Moon & Stars Buckthorn Pen – 806009

This pen has been made with the astronomical theme of moon and stars depicted in the gold plated fittings. The wooden body is made from a single piece of Buckthorn wood which was cut to length prior to turning. By using this method the grain and colouring of the wood follows through from top to bottom. Buckthorn Heartwood is a yellowish-orange, sometimes with darker red or brown streaks. Sapwood is a pale off-white or straw colour. The fruit of most Buckthorn species contain a yellow dye and the seeds are rich in protein. Oils from the seeds are used for making lubricating oil, printing ink, and soap.

When making the pen body, the two parts were turned on a common mandrel to approximate size before being sanded with decreasing grade of abrasive papers. When the surface felt very smooth to the touch the grain was sealed with a coat of cellulose sanding sealer. before the final sanding with 1600 grit cloth. This handmade bolt action bullet pen has a real bolt action which opens the ballpoint pen! No twisting or clicking to do. Grab the bolt action and slide it down, lock it in place and start writing.

The pen has been made by hand turning a piece of Yew and finishing it to a mirror polish. The woodwork was sanded six times with progressively finer grit abrasive to create a very smooth surface. The surface is polished to a mirror like shine using 12 polishing steps to create a showroom quality finish. All external components are glossy Black Chrome plated to provide durable and dependable service.

Perhaps among the hardest of all softwood species, Yew is certainly a unique wood species. Its density and working characteristics are more inline with a heavy hardwood than a softwood, yet its tight, fine grain and smooth texture give it a lustrous finish.

Yet perhaps Yew’s greatest claim to fame is that of its mechanical properties: despite its strength and density, Yew has an incredibly low and disproportionate modulus of elasticity at only 1,320,000 lb_f/in²(9,100 MPa). What this means is that the wood is extremely flexible, yet strong, making it ideally suited for use in archery bows. In fact, Yew was the wood of choice for English longbows in medieval warfare.

The replica .30 calibre bullet cartridge and the chrome bullet tip both add authenticity to the look of this pen.

Lilac wood Wavy Clip Ballpoint- 707005

This creation was made as a special commission. The wood used is Lilac from a tree in my garden which needed severe pruning. Lilac is usually quite pale resembling a fine grained Ash. However this piece had several knots in it which although made turning rather tricky it had given a very interesting grain pattern similar to ‘Birdseye’ Maple. The fittings were selected based on the need for a light weight slim shape, but still looking unusual with the wavy clip and spherical button on top. The metal fittings have a polished gold finish to add to the distinctive modern design.
A blue gel Parker type refill is fitted as standard, but can easy be changed by carefully unscrewing the tip from the body. This standard refill can be purchased at most stationary stores.

This unique twist action ball point pen was created using an actual electronic printed circuit board encased in polyester resin. This stunning pen is ideal for anyone interested in computers, electronics or just as a talking point!
The metal fittings have a highly polished chrome finish to contrast with the highly polished black grip and end cap.
A black Parker type refill is fitted as standard, but can easy be changed by carefully pulling the lower metal section from the coloured part of the pen. The metal twist mechanism is then unscrewed to reveal the refill.
