Simply twist the fishing scene on the top of the pen to extend and retract the writing tip.

The body of the pen was made using a piece of Walnut recovered from a broke shotgun stock. After having turned the blank to size it was sanded with steadily reducing grit size papers before coating with sanding sealer to fix the grain. Against abrasive paper of 1200 grit was used to de-nib the surface before eight coats of Melamine laquer were applied to give a hardwearing surface.

The black ink is contained in a standard ‘Parker’ type refill which can be accessed by carefully unscrewing the tip to reveal the refill. Replacement is simply a reverse of the process.

The body of the pen is made from Olive Wood. A native of Europe and East Africa, Olive wood heartwood is a cream or yellowish brown, with darker brown or black contrasting streaks. Color tends to deepen with age. Olive is somtimes figured with curly or wavy grain, burl, or wild grain. It is often used for high-end furniture, veneer, turned objects, and small specialty wood items just like your pen!

Once the body was turned to size the surface was finished with several grades of abrasive finally using 1600grit. A coat of clear lacquer was then applied, allowed to dry and then de-nibbed with more 1600 grit.  At this point a Harley Davidson logo water slide transfer was  made and placed on the pen body. After leaving to dry over night the pen body was given a light coating of Melamine spray  to seal the transfer in place. This spray process was repeated eight more times before the final coat was buffed with a micro-fibre cloth.

To replace the ‘Parker’ style refill unscrew the Eagle head tip from the body. Replace the refill, position the spring carefully on the neck of the refill and screw the parts back together.

Cut from a single piece of wood has allowed the grain to follow through from top to tip. Having turned to body to the required dimensions it was sanded with several diminishing grade of abrasive paper. Next a coat of cellulose sander sealer was used to stabilise the surface before more sanding and then several coats of Melamine spray finish were applied.

It uses a smooth writing Parker style refill which can be changed by pulling the two halves of the pen apart. Next the twist mechanism is unscrewed (anticlockwise) to release the refill. Assembly is  straight forward reversing the dismantling. However, it is suggested that the twist mechanism is set in the retracted position before the two halves are carefully pushed together ensuring the wood grain aligns.

Smooth writing performance with a Parker style refill. Plus, the Antique Pewter finish is formulated to simulate the sophisticated sheen of time-worn pewter. The authentic patina and natural darkening brings out the details of the finish and creates a unique feel with a charm all its own. It will add a sense of warmth to your to your handmade creation.

The body of the pen has been turned from Mountain Ash which give the attractive golden brown colouring. This piece was cut to include some of the creamy sapwood as a contrast to enable a message to be applied using the waterslide transfer method. Once dry the pen body was sprayed with several coats of clear Melamine gloss lacquer until a glass-like finish was achieved.

The writing tip is retracted by gently twisting the tip whilst holding the body. To extend the tip just twist in the opposite direction.

To change the refill simply retract the tip and then gently continue twisting. The pewter end cap will unscrew to allow you to then replace the refill.

The pen tip features a fierce, intricately cast eagle head with the engraved words, “Ride Hard. Live Free” as a band above the eagle head. A true to life old school single cylinder engine adorns the pen end. A machined shock absorber sits beneath the engine while the engine’s straight exhaust pipes act as the pen clip. On the shock absorber you’ll find a super cool “kickstart” mechanism that replicates the kickstarter on the motorcycle. This mechanism functions the same way as my Bolt Action pens to smoothly advance and retract the refill.

The body of the pen is made from American Black Walnut. It would be hard to overstate Black Walnut’s popularity among woodworkers in the United States. Its cooperative working characteristics, coupled with its rich brown coloration puts the wood in a class by itself among temperate-zone hardwoods. To cap it off, the wood also has good dimensional stability, shock resistance, and strength properties. It is often used for the following: Furniture, cabinetry, gunstocks, interior paneling, veneer, turned items, and other small wooden objects and novelties.

Once the body had been turned to size on the lathe the surface was finished with several grades of abrasive finally using 1600grit. A coat of clear lacquer was then applied, allowed to dry and then de-nibbed with more 1600 grit. This process was repeated four more times, before the clients requested logo was replicated as a water-slide transfer. This was applied to the lacquered pen body and left to dry overnight. Once dry another four coats of lacquer were applied each being lightly sanded. One the final coat had been achieved the cylindrical body was coated in hard Carnuba wax and then buffed to a high sheen. The final assembly then took place ensuring all composed aligned correctly with the encased Croix De Fer log.

The Parker style refill can be removed by unscrewing the Eagles head and sliding out the spring and refill.

The body of the pen is made from Zircote (pronounced  zi·ri·co·te  \ ˌzirəˈkōtā \) which has a very unique appearance, sometimes referred to as “spider-webbing” or “landscape” grain figure.  The grain is straight to slightly interlocked with a medium to fine texture and a beautiful natural luster. It is quite a rare timber being found only in southern Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.Common uses for Zircote are:  Furniture, veneer, cabinetry, gun-stocks, musical instruments (usually acoustic and electric guitars), and other small turned objects. Moto Villa are known mainly for their classic motorcycles and engines. When creating the logo transfers  I tried to create a slightly distressed “old, used” look.
Once the wood had been turned on my lathe it was sanded to 1200 grit before sealer was applied to close the grain. Another careful sand with 1600 grit prepared the surface for spraying with a hardwearing Melamine lacquer. Once dry, the custom-made transfers were applied and after leaving to dry overnight four more coats of spray were applied. Each being sanded before the next coat was applied.
Once completed the Antique Pewter fittings and Damson body were assembled ready for delivery.

The Parker type refill is changed by simply unscrewing the pointed tip of the pen. Compatible refills are available from all good stationery stores.

Questa penna è una coppia creata appositamente come regali dal mio cliente Richard Butler a Francesco Villa e Daniele Neri entrambi partner nel business motociclistico di Moto Villa vicino a Milano.
Il corpo della penna è realizzato in legno Damson proveniente da un albero che doveva essere tagliato nel mio giardino alcuni anni fa. Le damigelle sono un parente stretto della prugna, tuttavia il frutto è molto astringente, quindi si trova più comunemente nella produzione di marmellata. Il legno di Damson ha una tessitura fine con venature strette e una leggera lucentezza naturale. Il durame può presentare una cornucopia di colori, in genere marrone giallastro, con venature miste di rosa, arancio, rosso, viola, oliva o grigio. A causa delle piccole dimensioni degli alberi di Plum & Damson, vortici roteanti o irregolari, come nodi e altri difetti sono comuni. Fortunatamente per le piccole dimensioni occorrono penne che sono state evitate.

Moto Villa è conosciuta principalmente per le loro motociclette e motori classici. Durante la creazione dei trasferimenti di logo ho cercato di creare un aspetto “vecchio, usato” leggermente angosciato.
Una volta che il legno è stato girato sul mio tornio, è stato levigato a 1200 grit prima che il sigillante venisse applicato per chiudere il grano. Un’altra sabbia accurata con grana 1600 ha preparato la superficie per spruzzare con una resistente vernice melaminica. Una volta asciutti, i transfer personalizzati sono stati applicati e dopo aver lasciato asciugare per una notte sono stati applicati altri quattro strati di spray. Ciascuno veniva levigato prima dell’applicazione della successiva mano.
Una volta completati i raccordi Antique Pewter e il corpo Damson sono stati assemblati pronti per la consegna.
