It is then sanded smooth with several grades of abrasive finally using 12000 grit micromesh to  finish it to a mirror polish.  Four coats of a special hard polish are then applied. Each being buffed to a high shine on a revolving lathe. Perazzi Shot guns are some of the best in the world. Their stocks and forends are made of the finest quality Walnut root from centuries-old trees, like the one in the photograph.. Each blank is carefully selected and classified before they are subjected to a long drying processing before being made into stocks. Grading is based on the detail and colours of wood grain. This stock was graded SCO which is the highest grade Perazzi use.

The material blank is the cut to make the two parts of the pen body. These two blanks are then turned on a wood lathe to the required diameters to fit the 22ct gold plated fittings.

Micromesh abrasive is then used in various grade ending up with 12000 grit. Finally 3 coats of hardwearing polish are applied whilst the lathe is spinning and is then buffer to a high gloss. After leaving to stand overnight a coat of hard Carnuba wax is applied before a final polish. This particular pen made from Palo Santo wood. A very attractive stripe grained wood also known as Holy Wood.  It has been valued for its therapeutic properties since centuries ago. The direct translation from Spanish means ‘holy stick’. It is  harvested from an indigenous tree in arid areas of South America. The tree belongs to the same family as myrrh and frankincense, which are classified as Burseraceae. Palo Santo is used for a wide variety of purposes ranging from medicinal  tea, incense and palo santo essential oil production, to home furniture and flooring.

Please do not burn your pen though !

This particular pen made from locally sourced Yew. Yew timber is rich orange-brown in colour, closely grained and incredibly strong and durable (hence why old trees can remain standing with hollow trunks). Yew trees have long been associated with churchyards and there are at least 500 churchyards in England which contain yew trees older than the building itself. Traditionally the wood was used in turnery and to make long bows and tool handles. One of the world’s oldest surviving wooden artifacts is a yew spear head, found in 1911 at Clacton-on-sea, in Essex, UK. It is estimated to be about 450,000 years old.

Yew is a popular hedging and topiary plant. Anti-cancer compounds are harvested from the foliage of Taxus baccata and used in modern medicine.
