The Vertex is a push-button operated ballpoint pen.  Fittings are made of  striking hexagonal steel with a highly polished chrome plated finish.

The Lilac body was hand-turned in my workshop a meer 3 metres away from the Lilac tree that produced the pen blank. Having been turned to almost exact shape and size, it was then smotthed with various grakes of abrasive paper ranging fro 320grit to 1200grit. Two coats of sanding sealer were then applied with a slight sand to de-nib the surface. Water-slide transfers were then produced with the wording on. After leaving to dry overnight the transfers were applied and again left to dry..Several light coats of Melamine lacquer are then used to seal the transfer in place each being allowed to dry before a light sand to de-nib the surface before it was buffed with soft cotton cloth.

To replace the ‘Parker’ typel refill simply unscrew the hexagonal tip from the body.Ensure the spring at the top of the body tube is not lost during this process.

So its quite apt that this pen was made as a set to celebrate a couples engaement. Combining together the legend based on Syringa and Pan along with the decoration of stars and moon seems so appropriate.

When making the pen body, the two parts were turned on a common mandrel to approximate size before being sanded with decreasing grade of abrasive papers. When the surface felt very smooth to the touch the grain was sealed with a coat of cellulose sanding sealer. before the final sanding with 1600 grit cloth.  Water-slide transfers were then created with the couples names. These were applied on the smooth surface before allowing to dry overnight. A coat of clear  lacquer were then sprayed and allowed to dry for several hours. This process was repeated six times until a glass like finish was achieved.

Once the lacquered had hardened the various parts of the pen were carefully assembled to ensure the grain on each part followed through.

The Parker type refill is changed by simply pulling the two wooden halves of the pen apart. Then the extended mechanism is unscrewed. See photgraphs for detail

The metal fittings have a highly polished chrome finish to contrast with the highly polished multi-colour body.

By holding the body and rotationg the chrome top car the writing tip can be moved in or out.

To change the refill simply hold the body firmly in one hand and unscrew the chrome tip. Carefully slide out the ‘Parker’ style refill being careful not to lose the spring.
Replacement is simply a case of reversing this process. (See photo for details)

A black Parker type refill is fitted as standard, but can easy be changed by carefully unscrewing  the lower black section from the coloured part of the pen. This standard refill can be purchased at most stationary stores.

The pen in the picture is the one you will receive. If you are interested in multiple pens, please contact us. Since each pen is a unique work of art, exact duplicates are not possible. But, we will do our best to create duplicates of the pen, using the same wood and finish.

Simply twist the fishing scene on the top of the pen to extend and retract the writing tip.

The body of the pen was made using a piece of Walnut recovered from a broke shotgun stock. After having turned the blank to size it was sanded with steadily reducing grit size papers before coating with sanding sealer to fix the grain. Against abrasive paper of 1200 grit was used to de-nib the surface before eight coats of Melamine laquer were applied to give a hardwearing surface.

The black ink is contained in a standard ‘Parker’ type refill which can be accessed by carefully unscrewing the tip to reveal the refill. Replacement is simply a reverse of the process.

This elegant pen is made from highly polished Olive wood with black plated metal components.  Olive is a native of Europe and East Africa. Olive trees are commercially important throughout the natural regions where they grow. There are several subspecies and hundreds of cultivars of Olea europaea; the olives harvested from the trees are made into olive oil. Because of the fruit’s economic importance, healthy, cultivated Olive trees (O. europaea) aren’t felled for timber. Availability is generally limited to pruned branches, trimmings, and diseased/storm damaged orchard trees. Short lumber, turning squares, and burls are occasionally available from wild trees, as well as the closely related East African Olive (O. capensis). Prices are usually very high.

The Tech Olive Wood pen has a super smooth, quiet click mechanism. The pen comes with a black ‘Parker’ type refill installed. Replacements can be obtained from most good stationers.
The refill may be changed by simply unscrewing the black pointed tip.

The main body of the pen is hand turned from Thuya Burr which is found mainly in the Atlas mountains of Morocco, but there are sub-populations to be found in Malta and Southern Spain. The colour is generally an orangish or reddish brown, tending to darken with age to a medium to dark reddish brown. It is nearly always exported and sold as burls from the root of the tree, with the plain or unfigured wood of little commercial value. Thuya Burr  is usually used for carvings, veneer, decorative boxes, turned objects, and other small speciality wood items, such as your pen!

Once the body of the pen had been turned down to size and shape it was sanded with numerous grades of abrasive from 240grit down to 1200. A coat of sanding sealer was applied to help obtain a smooth finish by knitting the woods fibres together. This was then lightly sanded again with 1200g before 6 thin coats of Melamine lacquer were applied each being allowed to harded, denibbed and the the next applied.

To change the standard ‘Parker’ typre refill the tip is unscrewed from the body, carefully ensuring the sring is not lost. once removed the new refill is inserted, the scring slid over the neck of the refil and the tip screwed back into place.

Additional Information on Handcrafted Pens

The body of the pen is made from Olive Wood. A native of Europe and East Africa, Olive wood heartwood is a cream or yellowish brown, with darker brown or black contrasting streaks. Color tends to deepen with age. Olive is somtimes figured with curly or wavy grain, burl, or wild grain. It is often used for high-end furniture, veneer, turned objects, and small specialty wood items just like your pen!

Once the body was turned to size the surface was finished with several grades of abrasive finally using 1600grit. A coat of clear lacquer was then applied, allowed to dry and then de-nibbed with more 1600 grit.  At this point a Harley Davidson logo water slide transfer was  made and placed on the pen body. After leaving to dry over night the pen body was given a light coating of Melamine spray  to seal the transfer in place. This spray process was repeated eight more times before the final coat was buffed with a micro-fibre cloth.

To replace the ‘Parker’ style refill unscrew the Eagle head tip from the body. Replace the refill, position the spring carefully on the neck of the refill and screw the parts back together.
