Recently I was commissioned by a friend to make a themed pen and pencil set for her father’s 80th birthday.

Having spent most of his life in the motor and motorsport industry what better design than one of my Gearshift designs. I was also asked if I could make the set from Yew as this is her father’s favourite try with lots of boyhood memories. Luckily I had recently been given a broken longbow by a friend who makes them. Apparently one never knows 100% if it will be strong enough until it is tested, and this one failed! However, it did produce some extremely spectacular examples of Yew wood with differing coloured stripes.

This is an unusual pen design inspired by my best selling bolt action pen mechanism. Whilst you will see other similar Gearshift pens in my Portfolio, this is a unique set as I was able to adapt the ballpoint design to incorporate a technical pencil mechanism. This involved moving from my wood turning lathe to my metalworking lathe to manufacture an intricate insert adapter.

The mechanism design is based on a six-speed H pattern car gear change and can be shifted just like the real thing! The cap features a car tyre with a true to life tread and hubcap. The tip features the same tyre tread as the cap. The gear knob includes an etched five-speed pattern. And the industrialised crowbar clip attaches to the body with two small screws rounds to out the design. The refill fully advances at the front of the shifter and fully retracts at the back of the shifter. The design uses a popular Parker style refill which can be accessed by unscrewing the tip to reveal the refill. Replacement is simply a reverse of the process. The pencil uses standard 0.7mm pencil leads available from any good stationary store. The gear knob is simply pressed down momentarily to eject the next section of lead.

Printed Circuit Board Pencil – 811019

This eye-catching pencil has been called the Engineers Pencil because of the combination of electronic circuit board and chequered flag effect. The whole unique design creating a slim line body with ergonomic grip for comfort and ease of use.

Made from a real Printed Circuit Board rolled and encased in transparent plastic with satin black plated fittings. What a perfect gift idea!

The pen has been made by carefully hand turning the potted PCB and finishing it to a mirror polish. All external components are satin black platied to provide durable and dependable service.

The 0.7mm lead is extended by clicking the top cap until the correct length is attained. The cap can be removed to use the small eraser should you made an error. Which in turn can be removed to access the internal lead storage section.

Olive Wood Workshop Pencil 606027

This pencil was made using Olive Wood which is a by-product of the olive growing industry in mediteranean countries. Once the trees are too old to bare enough olives to be economical they are cut down for their wood. The heartwood is a cream or yellowish brown, with darker brown or black contrasting streaks. Colour tends to deepen with age. Olive is sometimes figured with curly or wavy grain, burl, or wild grain. This example has bee sealed with a light coat of polish to protect it from finger marks, but has been kept matt to enhance its natural beauty.

The mechanism used is chrome plated steel with a three claw grip to hold the 5.6mm diameter lead. The claws are extended to release the lead by pressing the knurled top button.

Twist Action Pencil – Chiyogami Yuken – 50109

This contemporary looking twist action pencil was made was made to compliment a similar project from last year.

The central body has a tube covered in Chiyogami Yuken. This is a beautifully screen printed paper from Japan. The designs were originally based on the bright kimono textiles from the Edo period (1603 – 1868) which the papermakers from the countryside saw on fashionable wealthier ladies in larger cities. Ciyogami, literally thousand generation (chiyo) paper (gami), is meticulously produced by hand. Each layer of colour is silk screened on individually. This chosen pattern is 日本の女の子 or Japanese Girl. The rolled paper was then cast in resin before being hand turned to shape. Several grades of abrasives were then used to polish the pen barrel followed by a final buffing with metal polish.

The metal fittings have a highly polished Chrome finish to contrast with the highly polished titanium coloured components at either end.

A black Parker type refill is fitted as standard, but can easy be changed by carefully unscrewing the lower black section from the coloured part of the pen. This standard refill can be purchased at most stationary stores.

Since each pen is a unique work of art, exact duplicates are not possible. But, I will do my best to create duplicates of the pen if requested
